Social Media influence

Social Media is a way of connecting with those people share the most with. It’s an exceptional tool to communicate with family and friends that live somewhere else. But in the most basic sense of the idea behind social media, there is the theory of the six degrees of separation, where a person is able to connect to another by just six other people that interact with each other. The concept of the six degrees of separation started with and American academic named Stanley Milgram who made experiments with several people and a letter.

Virtual professionals

The same concept applies to the professional world, as people network with others to find a new job or being hired by a new employer. LinkedIn, the social network where people are able to find jobs and interact with professionals in their field, released statistics about the usge of their site.

As of July 2011, LinkedIn has 119 million members, among which 59,5% is male. The United States is the country with the most active members, being a total of 50% out of the top 10 countries in the world, which include the 80% of all LinkedIn members.

The area with more growth in the world is Latin America, with a 34,6% more users than six months before, being Brazil the country which has grown the most on LinkedIn. Launched in May 2003, this social network is one of the most solid ones that have ever existed, being older that Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, some of the most popular ones out there; and so, the website’s growth rate continues to increase with time. In October 2009 there were 50 million users, in May 2010 the number of active users was raised up to 70 million, and now is almost double that.

According to the stats released by LinkedIn, their own employees have also grown within the
company and continue to do so. In one year, the company has grown about 90% in amount of employees working for it. At the same time, their employees have changed their title about two times more than similar companies working in the same industry.
